Even if you had, you might not have seen all of them. His smiles are pretty rare, and that makes them even more precious. And sometimes, he smiles with just his eyes - it's cute, he thinks he's not obvious about it, but he really is.
[ god. he sounds so affectionate, as he stirs the last of the ingredients together and dumps in the chocolate chips. as for how long they've known each other... ]
Mmm... A long time. I'm not sure if I could give you exact years. [ there's something that flickers behind his eyes, here, too, but lu bixing shakes it off quickly. ] But my life's a thousand times better when he's in it, and that's for sure. I think the story of how we met's more interesting than the how long, to be honest.
[ he appreciates this - this little moment of levity, in the middle of an absolutely terrible weekend. he's measuring out scoops of dough to place on a cookie sheet, and talks soft with nostalgia as he explains. ]
...I met him because I found his ecopod floating in space in the middle of nowhere. An ecopod is a device that can hold a single person in transport for an extended period of time - he was completely unconscious, completely - well, naked, and I found him out of sheer chance on my way out of the Eighth Galaxy for the first time. I stopped everything I was doing to bring his ecopod in and wake him up. I'd never met him before, I had no idea who he was, just that he was a handsome guy in the middle of space who had to have some kind of crazy mystery behind him.
No idea who he was, or what he was like-- just that he was out there alone.
[and handsome, yes, but for once he leaves that part alone; his voice is a little softer there, as well.]
A lot of people would think that's a crazy thing to do, you know, but I feel like this makes sense with what I've seen from you. [a little laugh, there, a shake of his head.] How'd he react after you woke him up?
I couldn't just leave him there. [ so, yeah. rynlan's got him in one. ] And - that doesn't even cover part of it! It was a struggle, to try and get him to wake up. I worked for a full day and night trying to crack the code on the lock on the pod.
[ ... and he knows, now, why he was able to get the lock, but he doesn't bother with that part, either, just smiling down at his cookie sheet; he won't let even that tiny bit of bitterness take away the warmth of the way he felt that day. ]
...He was mostly just confused, and - well, embarrassingly, the way I woke him up was pretty stupid, so, I'm sure he was judging me. [ he sounds incredibly affectionate even when he says that. ] But I explained to him where he was and took him back to Beijing Beta to run some tests and make sure he was okay. He said he didn't have any memories, at the time, but he was definitely lying.
It's funny, now. I was about to step out on my grand journey. I was going to travel all eight galaxies, and explore all over the place, but all I did was get Lin and turned right back around and went home.
lu bixing's quiet, for a moment, stilling entirely. fate. luck. both of those things. ]
...yeah.
[ there's more weight to that than he really means for there to be. lu bixing is good at keeping himself from overreacting to things, but - he's glad, that rynlan can't see his face. ] Yeah, we are.
[ he shakes his head a little, and then laughs. ] What a fate, though! Like finding the princess in the castle without the dragon.
Like stumbling on a castle you didn't even know was there in the first place.
[he busies himself with cleaning up a bit, then, gathering up used bowls and utensils, setting aside ingredients that need to be put away. just so that he's facing away still, not looking at each other.]
I wouldn't be surprised if he feels the same way. I've sort of been in his place, before.
Wouldn't have lived as long as I did, if someone hadn't found me in a similar sort of way. Obviously nothing like being out in space, but-- well, you know, analogous kind of situation.

[cute... this is cute.]
How long have you known each other?

[he's not taking a seat on the counter, but he is definitely leaning heavily against it now, settling in there.]

Pretty big wrench in your plans, then, but... it seems like it was the kind that was meant to happen, if it meant you two meeting.
[with the way he talks about lin-- yeah. seems like it to him.
a little softer still:]
...you're lucky you have each other, I think.

[he shrugs, slightly.]
Always thought I was pretty lucky for it.
