[home biome time! rynlan may have one fucked up leg but hey, this is what the cane is for, right? right. he has full confidence in his ability to get around and be fine afterward.
when they enter this biome, though- what it shapes itself into is the interior of a building, opening into a main room with a seating area, a sofa, and walls lined floor to ceiling with bookshelves. off to the side is a large workdesk, and the wall here is covered in herbs hung up to dry, shelves with carefully labeled jars, and more books; the desk itself has all kinds of strange paraphernalia including tubes and beakers and jars, full of substances in varying colors, and next to it is a large cauldron. there's a smaller version of the cauldron on the desk, as well.
another room off to the side has a different type of seating, and there's another door or two that seem to be closed and locked.
rynlan pauses, inside the doorway, taking in the sight with widened eyes.]
[ oh, it's a house! well, this is nothing like anything bixing has ever seen, and when the biome forms around what has to be rynlan's house -- well, lu bixing looks delighted! he brightens up immediately, almost starry eyed as he like, almost predictably and immediately starts to go for the jars and beakers and stuff.
well. okay. not really, because he stops and like, makes sure rynlan doesn't get bowled over. ]
Home, right? [ there's a smile on his face as he says it, like, delighted. ] Here - here, come sit down and take it in - this place is lovely, Rynlan, you've really got a developed sense of style!
[but he just sounds amused, more than anything, as he settles in and drapes himself on the couch. bixing can look at the alchemy stuff-- they're all labeled in thalassian, though, he'll have to ask if he wants to know things in detail.]
Well. Former house, now, but I still think of it as home.
Mentioned exile once, didn't I? Silvermoon wasn't pleased with our study of the void.
[he exhales a sigh, shakes his head. at least the confidence means he's less bothered by it.]
Our magic source, the Sunwell-- when it was restored, it was with Light. We were forced out before this ever occurred, but the first void elf to be too near to it set off a reaction. If we had a chance before that we certainly don't, now; they see us as a risk to our own most sacred site.
[ ah... that makes sense. it's tragic - it makes him wonder, if perhaps this little biome might show him beijing beta someday - but there's a little nostalgia in it, too. ]
...Then, it must be especially nice, to be able to be home. This is your alchemy, right? That I'm looking at, here?
Oh, I'd love to be able to test these in the lab. I'm sure they wouldn't last out of this room, though.
[ hes already basically read this situation as a simulation so he won't get his hopes up, but he is absolutely looking them over with the kind of nerdy glee he shows just about any situation where he gets to learn about something wild and exciting. he makes his way over to the tools to check those out, too, just fascinated. ]
Do you miss it? Being able to make things like this.
I do, yes. Little jealous of the computer setup, honestly, don't see why those of you who know them should be the only ones who get to keep their hobbies up.
['ryn you are the only one who knows fantasy alchemy here' will that stop him from being annoyed at what he thinks is other people being catered to. no.]
Don't be. They're awful. It would be like trying to build all of this - [ he gestures wildly at the alchemy stuff ] - using baking ingredients or children's toys.
[ terrible
he will stop ogling at it all and come to sit down with him, though, folding his legs underneath him to take a seat on the comfy couch and look around. ]
on closer inspection, it's no surprise rynlan had so little knowledge of tech. there's zero sign of it; the lighting in here is clearly magical, shades holding tiny orbs of light that float gently inside, and there's no kindling for either cauldron. most of the equipment doesn't have a visible way that it operates, and the decorative curtains affixed to the ceiling are stuck there by some invisible force.]
[ listen. he'd also love to play with alchemy stuff. alas.
of course he's poking around at all of this stuff, and when he finally sits down, he puts his hands in his lap to keep from like. documenting and testing out everything. this is someone's house. ]
You know, anything "magical" in my world could be explained away with physics, or sleight of hand. It's really hard not to try and apply physics to everything magical.
Well, they do operate under their own rules. You can't take any form of magic and do anything with it, and the arcane arts especially take more study-- if you lived here, I think it's what you'd be the most suited to. Arcane magic, engineering and alchemy.
Well, I am the best engineer in the Eighth Galaxy. I'm cute and talented.
[ he is in fact... engineer 001. he's playing it up with the cheeky confidence of the week, putting a hand under his chin even and striking a fake pose. uwu ] It'd be fun, I'm sure.
[ god. wouldn't that be fun to learn? he's reflecting on that for a moment, letting his as ever wild imagination carry him...
and as he does, the little simulation swaps! talk about a surrounding change. i don't have a visual for you because novel, but - the biome switches over to the surroundings of a cozy little house. the first sensation you might get here is that immediately warm sense of hospitality. it's little, a living room outfitted with an incredibly comfortable couch - rynlan will notice immediately that the seat actually adjusts to whatever his preferred comfort level is, automatically - and a sleek, concave screen that's inlaid into the wall. there's a coffee table just in front of them, coasters and a mug that says #1 HEADMASTER on it sitting there already. just over to the left, he can see there's a fish tank carrying a variety of colorful fish, and a doorway that leads to a cozy little kitchen outfitted with futuristic appliances. beyond that, though, it'd be hard pressed to tell this place is thousands of years in the future.
the window closest to rynlan that opens out to the front yard is open, and the air smells sweet and fragrant, like lucida flowers. he might just be able to see the edge of... some kind of robot just barely visible on the other side of the door, and a clean, manicured lawn with neatly planted hedges. a coffee table nearby holds a picture frame of lu bixing and his four students, smiling for a camera somewhere, and it just feels... nice, in here.
it feels like home.
bixing exhales out, surprised, his hands twitching.
he's silent, for a moment, and then calls out, quietly: ]
...Zhanlu?
[ no response, but then: Welcome to the home of Engineer 001 and Commander Lin. that voice should sound familiar - like the one that comes out of the little robot arm that lin jingheng has. bixing laughs a little, and his expression shifts into a smile as he sits back on the couch. ]
