The God-Sealing Barrier that surrounded the bulk of the continent I lived on. For a thousand years, no one could get in or out. In that time, the development of magic flourished within the barrier and languished in the lands beyond it.
When a part of the Dark Lord was revived, demons waged war against the world, but knew they would face opposition from the gods while their lord was not yet whole again. So the Dark Lord's minions put up a barrier around the lands that would be their battleground, keeping out any gods that would come as reinforcements.
