It doesn't mean never faltering or even falling to one's knees. Hope is what gives one the strength to take one step more, and another beyond that, and beyond that.

There was a bad gash that was older, with the bite marks over it. It looked as though they might've aggravated it. A rash, as well, though he said that didn't set in until after they were back...
