[ that's the whole thing of the eighth, after all. his people, his galaxy. himself, really. they're so different than the way the IUS sees them, so of course, it's stupid to think that it couldn't be that way with four, too.
he sighs, scrubbing a hand over his face, and stands up. off they go! ]
There's a start. I don't think I would've expected you to be a cook. [ a little teasing. ] I don't think all of our expectations always have to be too terrible. Maybe only half of the time.
Haha, I wouldn't say I am--it's just a hobby. I used to cook for my siblings back home a lot.
[But there's only so much to do around here, and it's the best way he knows how to make people feel better when they aren't the sparring types.]
I dunno, I think some of us are definitely that terrible. [That's probably a joke? Maybe it's about Scaramouche. Maybe it's both! Who's to say.] Really, it'd be better if we could rid ourselves of expectations entirely, but that's a lot easier said than done.
I think so, too. [ there's something about that that resonates. ] Who are we to decide what's right and wrong, who's defective, and who isn't? Just with a passing glance or a single conversation, especially when here, we barely know anything about each other. Even our worlds are different. What sort of a baseline is that?
[ whew. it's a heavy topic, and lu bixing doesn't touch on whether he thinks childe is terrible or not, or if he's terrible himself. he is. ]
[Childe hums in wordless agreement, moving around the kitchen to fetch tools and ingredients. He's clearly comfortable with the layout. Fortunately it's no longer liar's week so between the two it's pretty obvious that he knows what he's doing.
He lets the subject go for now, though. Partly because, quite simply, Lu Bixing is right--and partly because Childe, for all his flaws, will gracefully accept a subject change more often than not.
Besides, he'll never pass up a chance to talk about his family. He smiles fondly, passing Lu Bixing a knife and half a head of cabbage.]
Well, I've got six of them, for starters. Three older, three younger. [And I don't know the older ones names or even if they actually exist so waves hand. There are probably two older sisters and one older brother but who knows, not me.] The younger ones are Tonia, Anthon, and Teucer--Teucer's almost nine, actually. I was due to catch a ship home for his birthday before... [Y'know. Deda.]
That's good. Would've been easier to help if I had my abilities. [But alas.] What happened? I heard a little, but... [Obviously things were chaotic when they first got back]
[ he's definitely glad for the subject change - flashing childe a small, grateful smile, as he takes the knife. maybe surprisingly for a nerd, he does seem to know his way around cutting the cabbage, because his cuts are even and well placed. he's been practicing. ]
What a big family.
[ the warmth in his voice is genuine and affectionate, here. it's not something he's familiar with - he's never had siblings - but the love of family makes his heart ache, nonetheless. it's a little heartbreaking to hear the ship home part, but also... it really do be like that in hell, so he acknowledges it with a quiet noise, and keeps going. ]
Boys can be pretty rambunctious at this age. Do you get to see them often?
Haha, you're telling me! You know, he actually snuck onto a boat to come see me last year--sailed all the way to another country. I nearly had a heart attack when I found out what happened. Fortunately, a friend of mine found him before anything happened to him.
[That was definitely not a result of Childe spoiling him incessantly mmhmm yeah sure
He shakes his head, though.]
I travel a lot, so it keeps me away from home most of the time. I try to send souvenirs and letters when I can. [Which doesn't really make up for his absence, but... well. They know why he stays away.]
today, lu bixing is... in the kitchen! wow. it's his turn to be cooking something - it looks like he might be baking, actually, with the meager ingredients available to him? but he is very scientifically measuring out baking powder and putting it in a small bowl of other dry ingredients when childe comes in. ]
Anyway, eventually, Childe will come track him down; he stayed through the whole execution today, hanging out rather impassively in the background until the end. Do you ever just watch a guy gayly rip out your friend's throat? It happens.]
Hey, do you have a minute? [He can come back later if LBX is busy, or he'll help if LBX wants him to, either one.]
I spoke to Lavi last night. [Unsurprisingly; he assumes most people did.] He mentioned that you went on one of those little "adventures"--that you heard voices talking about keeping us here forever.
[ oh. god, that. he does not make a face, even if the emotional equivalent of "eugh" is there. ]
....Something like that, yes, though that was just a smaller part of it. You've been on quite a few of those, too, right? Do you want to compare notes?
I've only been on one myself. But I do think we should put together as much information as we can. [Muttered:] It'd be easier with Katya here, but... [And back in a normal tone--] I'm not sure how much it'll help, but I'd rather not sit on my hands and wait for things to run their course.
Mm. I agree with you. [ and he will pull up his personal device! the screens light up over his wrist, and he navigates a few screens over to a set of notes. ]
Right. So, each time we unlock some strange location, it has to do with either a new week or an odd encounter. Mine was out in the residential district, with Kon and D.va. We ran into the shapeshifting octopus, out of its tank, [ his nose wrinkles briefly. ] It was in the shape of a doll, and it sang us a song and chased us all over the place.
The part you're referring to.. the third verse, as we were going through the aquarium.
You see it's simple / I'm just a puppet made to keep you entertained But I'm so much more than meets the eyes / I'm sadistic, and I love pain So mes amis, just take your time and enjoy your joie d'vivre. 'Case like the Hotel California, you can come but never leave.
Childe doesn't have any notes on him, apparently; he just leans against the counter with his hands in his pockets, listening as Lu Bixing talks. Damn can't believe they ran into a Scaramouche doll... wild]
Like an ancient, ancient doll - like something out of an old movie. I may have a sketch in here somewhere, and if I don't, Kon probably does. We tried to get pictures, but it moved too fast, and it was too dark.
[ but rest assured! it was horrifying! ]
Really, it was referring to its 'one man show', over and over, and talking about the increasingly creative ways it could kill us. We managed to stop it when we got it out into the onsen - once it was out in the direct sunlight, it was much, much easier for us to catch. It took out the lights in each location we were in until then.
[CREEPY HORRIFYING DOLL... well at least that fits in with the general Hell Ambiance. His brow furrows as he mulls this over.]
I'd say that sounds odd, but it seems more fitting for this place than what Gideon, Rynlan and I ran into. [THEIR FRIENDLY HORRIFIC FURRIES. GOD.] I wonder if there's any truth to what it was saying, or if it was just meant to scare you all.
Well. We certainly learned that thing can be sadistic.
[ this octopus
but, less dead inside ]
I was thinking so, too. The description isn't off, if we're thinking about hell - and, honestly, I used what Gideon told me about yours when we first interacted with it, to try and see if I couldn't attempt to befriend it, but it didn't even remotely work.
Those paired with our adventure last week, and the one that Tuuri went on - it does seem like things are escalating.
[THE FUCKING OCTOPUS. They should've taken one for the team and voted for it tbh. W2 TPK but worth it.]
I wonder if it has anything to do with our "acclimation." If these islands of ours are heading... deeper into hell, or something like that. [Hmmm.] Then again, Lavi and Eto's adventure sounded a little more traumatic than ours, and they were the first, weren't they?
Mm, maybe. [Or maybe next week's adventure will be as stupid as meat ducks and only odd-numbered weeks are horrifying. Who's to say.]
Do you think these adventures are connected to the others at all? Yours from last week, Lavi's from this week. [The CYOAs... he seems doubtful about this one, though.]
Only in the way that they're designed to cause suffering.
[ he seems to agree - it seems doubtful. ] Whether that suffering is just the exhaustion of dealing with meat ducks, or the emotional suffering of making choices that could harm someone you loved, like my adventure was. That's the overarching theme of everything, so far, and not so creative, considering it's hell.
[Hilariously I cannot fucking find this in one clip for the life of me FOR SOME REASON so--
Perhaps they moseyed off to explore the new island, perhaps they're in the middle of discussing how best to deal with Octopus 2 Electric Boogaloo--A MYSTERY. I'll let you decide if the screen just pops up while they're talking or if they get knocked into a hole, but either way, Lu Bixing gets to see this memory from 9:13 to 15:37!!
Hmmm. Well. That's a little awkward, but it certainly could've been worse.]
