Well, back in the Ancient Earth days, there was a literal switch, so you'd just flip the switch up and down. Eight quick flips of a switch or not doesn't go too slow. Mostly, it gets translated to something called ASCII... though, even that tech is a bit archaic for me. Keyboards are meant for typing quickly.
